Wow, I had to read this as soon as I saw that you'd posted it. I remain addicted to this story. That scene with the spider was fantastic. Tense, atmospheric, and I love the way you've described the magic going on. I also seriously <3 Draco! ... and look forward to more as soon as and whenever there is more.
There are no words to describe how glee-shriekingly happy I am to see this awesome fic being updated once again. OMGYAY just doesn't cover it. :D
(Consequently, I may be forced to do some sort of crazed interpretive victory dance, accompanied by 1,000 Bollywood backup performers, covered in glitter and semi-transparent saris.)
Wonderful chapter. Every time I think I'm getting a handle on the bigger picture, something is revealed that blows my theory to kingdom come. Loved the scene in Trelawny's tower - so atmospheric and downright creepy.
Oh, and I forgot to say that the autopsy scene in the last chapter was rivetting readng. The amont of detail that goes into any use of magic you describe is, to use a teenage phrase, awesome.
You've no idea how much I've missed reading this fic :D Imho, I like to think SoHW is the epitome of awesome/plot-intensive h/d fic in a fandom littered with amazing fics. I had to go back and read the chapter summaries to remind myself of everything that had happened and it brought back all the anticipation and wonder I'd felt when I first read it :D
It was nice to have the twins and Harry sum up everything we've learned so far throughout the fic about necromancy and the power the dead have and the visions and Hermione...I mean, spread out throughout the chapters, given the amount of time between updates, I had a bit of trouble stringing together the clues and coming up with a conclusion. But Harry going to the twins was a nice way of reviewing the information while presenting us with what it could all mean. :D I applaud the detail and depth with which you've created the plot.
Also, Draco ;_; Despite that he's been in every chapter, I still MISS him (for reasons unknown even to me). He's THERE but...but there's that front that he has and there's all those unspoken things and issues between him and Harry that they skirted around in the Chamber. *sigh* Such awesome story-weaving :D
Wow, that was long-winded ^^;; Sorry! I should have just said, "I totally enjoyed the chapter, it was kick ass and wonderful :D"
I honestly consider this fic to be a better part 7 than book seven. As much of a Harry/Ginny shipper I have always been, H/D-Pansy/Neville makes for an amazing matchup.
As for the story I have a few ideas and nothings proven me wrong yet, but time tells. Just WOW!
I have felt for a long time that the best part of your work is its conversation with canon; teeth-grinding annoyance with JKR herself aside, you maintain a lot of respect and care for the bricks that you use to build this world. You draw out so many things so beautifully: the split between the wizarding and Muggle world, for example. How did you decide that wizards would continue to think of surgically cutting the body as an Unforgiveable (if you will)? I love how there are drabs of the Muggle world that make their way in, and the wizards interpret them so uniquely. What was the novel that Dean Thomas left at the Weasleys'?
I wonder if you'll ever read Deathly Hallows. I had problems with it, major problems, but there are some parts that prove how right you are about these characters, and I wonder what you'd think of them. The whole Battle of Hogwarts at the end proves both how important Hogwarts was to Voldemort, and how he desperately needed to remake it in his image. (In the book, he somewhat embarrassingly changes all the drapes to Slytherin colors and declares that all will be Slytherin from now on...but the underlying need for the world to be remade in his vision is the same!) I also like that Dumbledore became such a troubled character, not reliable, and almost as much of a hindrance to Harry (if you look at it a certain way) as your Dumbledore is. What the canon book unfortunately shows, though, is that the story is immensely weakened by JKR's insistence that the Malfoys are nothing but cowards. It is just plain weird that Harry's nemeses are ultimately people many times his age, and don't even get me started on the flatness of the Slytherins' storylines. At any rate, the joy of this story is not just the H/D-ness, but the fact that the Malfoys are an actual power to be reckoned with after all the setup of early canon.
Just a couple of other small pleasures - it's actually nice to have come around to November again while reading this story, and way to go on the pensieve smackdown. Objective observations my fat arse.
Thank you again for your commitment to the story and seeing it through.
i second maalena on this one. incredible fic, incredible writing. the first time, i plowed through the first 21 chapters more or less back to back, i just re-read it for the second time, and god i'm dying to know what happens.
I echo the sentiments of everyone here. I've just read all 21 chapters... and wow. HOW could I have missed this fic? Plotty and smart and with amazing, atmospheric, tight, AWESOME writing - not to mention hot and intense - this is some of the best writing I have read in a long time.
I'm also DYING to know what happens. I'm waiting with bated breath for the next chapter. ♥♥
I know I'm reading this super super late...but please don't abandon this fic. It has the most deliciously angst plot I've ever read - and beyond that it doesn't descend into mush. I was really tiring of H/D because it usually just focuses on cute romance and that's it. Then I read this and was reminded of why I like H/D in the first place - the explosive and unpredictable nature of those two characters together is riveting. Aside from their intense interaction, the action throughout the story is amazing and at times I'm stunned at certain aspects of your writing. The way you portrayed Lucius, for example, is fascinating and so believable. I know it must be crazy time-consuming to write such an intricate plot but I really hope you continue at it (I'll be waiting with bated breath)
Even an outline! And outline of the plot would be better than no ending! I still re-read this every now and then, and it stands up after all this time.
The astonishing thing is that, even almost 13 years later, this remains one of the most extraordinary stories I've ever read. It repaid beating the shit out of the wayback machine until it coughed it up again, and quarantine and lockdown provided the perfect opportunity to reread. I would say that it almost doesn't matter that it paused where it did because what exists is so incredible, but let's face it, I'd be lying at least a little bit. It is a work of art, even incomplete. I am still in awe of you.
I hope you're still out there, still well, still writing for fun, still grumbling about the Miracat and Miracat Minor (though possibly they've both graduated since you last mentioned them). I hope that you're hanging out under a new name and I might one day get to read your work again.
Same, same, same, same. I am (gravities) from the earlier comment on this post. I saved all the chapters to PDF some time after Ch. 21, but I changed computers and they were stuck on our backup drive for several years. I finally ported everything to Google a couple of weeks ago and got completely consumed with SOTW through today. On this reading, I think I "got" more hints of how it would ultimately end, but I want to read it no less. Likewise wishing Mirabella well with many thanks for vast improvements on the HP universe.
